New Director to Lead the Puyallup Center

After four years of navigating the WSU Puyallup Research and Extension Center into new directions, Jon Newkirk will leave his position as Director of the Puyallup Center.

“Today, the Center has a redefined mission focusing on issues related to sustainability and rural-urban interface,” said CAHNRS Dean Dan Bernardo. “While there is much work to be done and many issues to be resolved, there is great hope and renewed enthusiasm for the Center and its role within Washington State University, CAHNRS, and WSU-Extension.

Much of the credit for this new found direction must go to Jon and the vision he brought to the Center.” He will continue his association with Washington State University on the Spokane campus with his work as Director of the Western Center for Risk Management Education.

John Stark, scientist and professor of entomology, will become the new director in Puyallup on November 3, 2008. Dr. Stark is a member of the Puget Sound Partnership’s Science Panel.

His research focuses primarily on salmon ecotoxicology, looking at the effects of pesticides and adjuvants in the water on salmon behavior.

He is also currently working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Sacramento California on protecting an endangered species of butterfly living in the Antioch Dunes National Wildlife Refuge.
