Virtual Oomycete Demonstration NurserySTATION 1
First, buying healthy and “clean” plant stock will keep levels of incoming inoculum at the lowest levels possible and will make other management strategies implemented at your nursery more effective. Prior to purchasing plants from a supplier, contact them and confirm that they follow best management practices that reduce the likelihood of spreading Oomycetes such as P. ramorum. Confirm that the supplier propagates nursery stock from materials on site or that stock is received from shipping nurseries that are licensed and certified according to all applicable phytosanitary laws and regulations. If you have been buying from a reputable wholesaler for several years and have never had any major disease issues with their stock you may still want to call and touch base with your supplier on these issues for your own reassurance. All incoming nursery stock should be visually inspected upon arrival for symptoms of Phytophthora (especially those of P. ramorum) prior to introduction into the nursery. Suspect plants should be rejected or held in an isolation block for testing. You can contact WSDA Plant Services to have an inspector come and check for symptoms of P. ramorum before the stock enters the nursery. Unload incoming plants in an area that can be cleaned of plant debris such as an asphalt driveway. Sweep up debris after deliveries and dispose of properly.
