STATION 2

Station 2The Dirty Pot Litmus Test: A quick and dirty way to get an indication of whether your supplier practices proper plant storage and sanitation is to inspect the sides and bottom of pots when they arrive. If the containers have clumps of soil and plant debris all over them it is likely that the plants were stored on bare mineral soil or under unsanitary conditions before they were shipped. Exotic and native species of Phytophthora and Pythium (including Phytophthora ramorum) can be brought into your nursery on soil debris clinging to pots. Accepting dirty pots is a risky behavior that should be avoided if possible.  In some instances plant material may have been stored in mulch which may give the appearance of “dirty’ pots. Inspect the pots carefully; it should be apparent if the pots have soil or just mulch caked to their sides.
