Virtual Oomycete Demonstration Nursery
STATION 4
When managing a group of organisms like Oomycetes which include USDA-APHIS regulated organisms like P. ramorum; layout becomes crucial to controlling inoculum spread in your nursery. In the case of P. ramorum, a good strategy is to store high-risk plants at a location where they can be delivered by wholesaler and picked up by customers without carrying them past other inventory. Avoid co-mingling high-risk genera (rhododendrons and camellias) with other host and non-host plants. Storing high-risk genera in a separate area of the nursery will also make it easier to facilitate a higher degree of management (monitoring, sanitation, and watering schedules). Plant debris under and around nursery stock should be collected and disposed of routinely especially around hosts at high-risk for P. ramorum infection. Maintain a cull pile specifically for known and associated hosts of regulated Oomycete species (including P. ramorum) and do not reuse soil from these cull plants.
