Golf Course Management: CropS 317

Course Description::
Crops 317 is a, distance education course covering current golf course management practices for turfgrass students and professionals in the golf course industry.
Course Content:
Tentative yearly schedule: 6-weeks, October - November (End before Thanksgiving)
1 credit hour
Prerequisite:
Crops 301 or equivalent with instructor's approval.
Objectives:
To teach or refresh current golf course management practices (BMP's) to turfgrass students and turfgrass industry professionals.
Methodology:
The course will consist of one assignment per week made available via distance education on the Internet. There will be discussions and introductions within the class via the Internet and bulletin boards to post assignments, etc. There will also be three major projects, which will be graded in sections as they are completed.
Week 1: Intro to Internet Coursework
Week 2: Best Management Practices and Grasses
Week 3: Best Management Practices for Weeds and Insects
Week 4: Disease Identification and Management
Week 5: Best Management Practices for Fertility
Week 6: Cultural Practices and Irrigation
Instructional Basis for Evaluation:
There will be an exercise on the Internet with each lesson. Doing these exercises will count for 60% of the grade. Participation in discussions will count for 30% of the grade. The final assignment will help tie all the Best Management Plans together, which will be 10% of grade.

Reading Materials:
Week 1: Golf Course Best Management Practices and Turfgrass Species; TM for GC: Chptr 1:p 31-37, Turfgrass Selection in Chptrs 3,4,5,&6. IPM: Chptrs. 12 & 13 plus relevant research articles and web sites.
Week 2: Fertilizer, Weed and Insect Best Management Practices (IPM); TM for GC: Chptr. 10 first part; IPM: Chptr. 1,2,4,5,6,7,9 & 10. (Relevant parts). This information will be used in Week 3 as well.
Week 3: Disease Identification and Management Practices (IPM); TM for GC: Chptr 10 last part; IPM: Relevant parts Chptrs. 3,8, 11 & Appendix 2.
Week 4: Soil Cultivation, Rolling and Topdressing Practices; TM for GC: Chptrs 3,4,5 & 6, Summary of Cultural Systems for each part of the GC, IPM: Chapter 4.
Week 5 Mowing and Irrigation Practices; TM for GC: Chptr 9, IPM: Chapters 1,2,3,4 & 6, Relevant sections.
Week 6: Site Establishment and Renovation and Wrapup; Tm for GC: Chptrs Chptrs 3,4,5 &6, Planting and rootzone mixing and establishment.
Crops 318 : Athletic Field Management

Crops 318 is an on-line course on best management practices for sports turf areas. An emphasis will be placed upon environmental considerations.

Prerequisites:
Students need to have taken a basic turfgrass course, Crops 301 or similar, or equivalent field experience and approval of the instructor. The course will build upon some previous knowledge of grasses.
